Calgary vs. Edmonton traffic

Driving around Edmonton the past few days made me think about the differences in traffic between Edmonton and Calgary. At first glace when you look at Calgary, you would think that it would be easy to get around quickly and that there would be good flow, since there are a number of north/south and east/west freeways. However, due to the sheer volume of cars on the Calgary roads, and the fact that there are random lights along these freeways, traffic always gets backed up (and I mean REALLY backed up -- as in having to wait four cycles of a traffic light to get through). I've also noticed that the lights are not synchronized in Calgary -- that is, if the light turns green and you get through the intersection, a light like a block away will just turn red. It's mind boggling. For those reasons, it seems to me that it takes a long time to get anywhere in Calgary.

Now, when I arrived in Edmonton the other night, there are certainly more lights, less freeways, and I suppose the volume is less. However, as I entered the city from the south, I didn't hit a single red light from highway 2 all the way to my parent's house in Gold Bar. And that's going through a lot of lights.

So although Calgary has the better infrastructure, the sheer volume and non-synchronization of their lights make traffic in Edmonton a whole lot better.

Dollar at 99.7 cents US...

It's at .9973 US right now...6:39 a.m. Will it reach parity today? Time for prices in Canadian stores to stop dropping, or I'll be doing a LOT of cross-border shopping!

Tuesday Update

I'm half way through my first month of internal medicine. It's going well so far. Call has been a bit crazy, but I guess that's life. I'll be heading back up to Edmonton between September 24 and September 27th, so if you're around and in town, give me a shout!

Superbad

Amanda and I went to see Superbad last night. It was awesome. I'm a big fan of these types of movies. Some of the lines from the movies are classic. Here are a few of my favourites:

Fogell: I have a boner!
------
Becca: Your cock is so smooth!
Evan: Well I bet you'd have a smooth cock if you... had one.
------
Becca: I'm so wet right now.
Evan: Yeah, I learned about that in health class.
------
Jules: You scratch our back and we'll scratch yours.
Seth: Well, the funny thing about my back Jules, is that it's located on my cock.
------
Seth: Nobody has gotten a B.J. in cargo shorts since ‘nam!
------
Evan: Just imagine if girls weren't weirded out by our boners and stuff, and just like wanted to see them. That's the world I one day want to live in
------
Seth: I draw dicks.
Evan: Like a man dick?
Seth: Yes, like a man dick.
Evan: That's supergay.
------

I recommend that all of you go see this movie. It will be quoted forever, so you better go and see it so you know what everyone is talking about.

Update

Amanda and I finished painting our kitchen on Tuesday. We still have a little touching up to do, but the main work is done. My uncle took us out for dinner on Wednesday night to Boston Pizza, which was great. I hadn't been to Boston Pizza in about 2 months, as we're trying to save money by not eating out. I think that's where most of my money went when I lived at home.

I'm on call this weekend (tonight, Saturday and Sunday), and again on Tuesday and Thursday. Lisa is coming to stay with us for a couple of weeks on Sunday as she does an elective at the Children's Hospital.

Amanda and I also booked a trip to Las Vegas at the end of November. We got a really good deal on it, so we couldn't pass it up. It was about half the price of going to Mexico, etc., but, of course, it won't be as warm in Las Vegas at that time. I'm saving all of my clothes and Christmas shopping until I get there. Hopefully the dollar stops its slide and I can get some good deals when I'm there. I need some new shoes, and I may purchase a tux there.

Anyways, I have to be in the hospital at 6:30a.m. tomorrow, so I'm going to go do some cleaning and then get some sleep!

Lazy Sunday

Amanda and I, along with Lindsey, Kevin and Karen, went floating down the Elbow River today. It was tons of fun, however, I got some sunburn because I'm not very smart. There were tons of people on the river, or, more appropriate, stream. Amanda and I floated down on a double air mattress. There were supposed to be cops checking for life jackets, etc, but we didn't actually see any on the river.

After our 3 hour float down the river, we stopped at TNT supermarket so I could get some groceries. If you've never been to TNT supermarket, it's a big asian grocery store. They always have some crazy sales, and, wouldn't you know it, they had whole beef tenderloins on for $5.99/pound. I bought a whole beef tenderloin for under $20. Crazy. I trimmed it and cut it into steaks. I might either go pick up another tenderloin or a whole striploin (around $40) later on this week. Can't go wrong with those prices.

I'm doing my last week of pulmonary. Should be good!

I'll be up in Edmonton this coming weekend, so if you're around, send me an email.
